A terakoya was a small private elementary school for ordinary children of farmers or merchants in middle ages or Tokugaga period in Japan. There were thousands of terakoyas in all over Japan, teaching, mainly arithmetic, reading and writing. In the middle of 19 century, around 80% of children in Japan were educated in Terakoya. This made Japanese literacy rate highest in the world at the time. I put the title here as terakoya, because I would like to open such a school here.
